What to Wear Before, During, and After Your Airbrush Tan

At Bronzier, we are committed to making sure you get the best possible results. We understand that a well-executed tan can make all the difference, and one of the most important factors in achieving a smooth, even, and natural-looking tan is the clothing you choose to wear. What you put on before, during, and after your session can play a crucial role in the outcome of your tan. Wearing the right attire ensures that your tan applies evenly, stays intact without streaking or fading prematurely, and develops to its full potential.

Whether it’s avoiding tight clothing that could leave marks or choosing the right fabrics to prevent transfer, small adjustments to what you wear can make a significant difference. To make your sunless tanning experience as easy and effective as possible, we’ve put together this straightforward guide. It covers everything you need to know about what to wear before, during, and after your session—so you can get the most out of your appointment and enjoy your tan for as long as possible.

1. What to Wear Before Your Airbrush Tanning Session

Before leaving the house for your bronzing session, you’ll want to consider your post-tan attire in addition to what you will want to wear during the airbrush itself.

  • Loose, Comfortable Clothing: Tight clothing can cause friction on your skin, which could result in the tan being absorbed into the fabric or the tanning rubbing away during the processing period. It’s best to opt for loose-fitting, breathable fabrics like a relaxed t-shirt, loose shorts/sweats, or even a flowy maxi dress. This allows your skin to stay comfortable and avoids disrupting the tan while it sets.

  • Avoid Tight Undergarments: Skip tight bras, leggings, or any undergarments with elastic bands that can leave impressions on your skin. Instead, choose minimal undergarments, such as just a thong, that won’t interfere with your tan during the processing period.

  • No Jewelry: If you do not wish to have tan lines, be sure to remove your jewelry before your session. Rings, bracelets, watches, earrings, or necklaces will not allow the airbrush solution to penetrate through where the jewelry sits. To ensure an even tan, it's best to go jewelry-free during your appointment. However, we understand a large majority of clients have permanent bracelets and/or necklaces. Your artist can certainly blend these thin line areas to reduce the appearance of tan lines made from them.

2. What to Wear During Your Airbrush Tanning Session

During your airbrush tanning session, it's up to you! It’s important to be mindful of both your comfort level and any potential tan lines when deciding on your airbrush attire.

  • Go Nude: Many clients opt to go completely nude during their airbrush session. This is the best way to ensure the most even coverage without worrying about tan lines. If you choose this option, rest assured that our technicians are trained to respect your privacy and maintain a comfortable environment.

  • Keep It Minimal: If you prefer to wear some clothing, consider wearing a bikini or thong. These options allow the technician to apply the tan evenly while still maintaining some coverage. Keep in mind that once a tan line is created, it cannot be blended out. If you're concerned about large tan lines, we offer disposable t-string thongs and pasties at no charge to help maintain privacy while ensuring bronzed results with minimal lines.

  • Fuller Coverage: If you're more comfortable with fuller coverage, you can wear your own bra, underwear, swimwear, and/or any other clothing of your discretion during your session. Just keep in mind that wearing fuller coverage items will result in larger, more noticeable tan lines. If you don't mind these tan lines, this option works well for you.

3. What to Wear After Your Airbrush Tanning Session

After your session, it’s important to wear clothing that allows your tan to set without disrupting the process.

  • Loose, Dark Clothing: After your tan is applied, wear loose, dark clothing. Dark colors help prevent any bronzer transfer onto your clothes. Choose breathable fabrics like cotton. If you forget to bring proper attire, we have spray tan friendly clothing for purchase.

  • Avoid Tight Clothing: Avoid tight clothing such as leggings, bras, or jeans right after your session. Tight clothes can leave imprints on your skin, which could create uneven areas in your tan as it develops.

  • Open-Toe Shoes: Opt for flip-flops, sandals, or any open-toe footwear to avoid smudging the tan on your feet and toes. Closed-toe shoes can rub against your feet and promote sweating, causing uneven results.

4. What to Wear After Rinsing Your Tan

Once you've rinsed off your tan, you are free to wear whatever you like. However, it's important to note that tight clothing worn on a regular basis can cause friction, which may lead to premature exfoliation in certain areas and affect the longevity of your tan.

Helpful Tips:

  • Apply Translucent Powder: Areas more prone to sweating, like underarms or the back of your knees, can cause the tan to fade more quickly. Applying a light layer of translucent powder to these areas on a daily basis helps absorb moisture and reduce friction.

  • Use Tan Extending Products: To keep your tan looking fresh for longer, apply tan extenders, tanning water, or moisturizers designed for self-tanning. Focus on areas that tend to fade first, like elbows, knees, and hands, to maintain an even appearance.

  • Hydrate Your Skin: Keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water and moisturizing regularly with products designed for tan maintenance. Well-moisturized skin holds onto your tan longer and helps it fade more evenly.

Choosing the right clothing before, during, and after your airbrush tanning session plays a big role in ensuring your tan develops evenly and lasts longer. At Bronzier, we want you to have a smooth, stress-free experience. If you have any questions or need further advice on what to wear, feel free to ask. We're here to help!
